Dear reader,

Welcome to our third issue of 2005 and the new face of Global Connections! As well as an exciting new format for our newsletter, we continue to bring you plenty of thought-provoking and insightful articles, as well as the latest news from around the region.

Firstly, Mike Naholi from the Kenyan Institute of Fundraising Professionals presents an intriguing overview of running a business as a social organisation. To follow, our own Simon Collings traces the growth of Association Firefly in Brazil, a non-profit organisation working amongst rural communities in the Amazon region, from the organisationâs beginnings through to its current success.

Next, we move from Brazil to Taiwan with a case study profiling the Garden of Hope Foundation - the NGO of the Year winner at the 2004 Asia Pacific NGO Awards.

Read on for worldwide news including how to nominate someone for the first International ePhilanthropy Awards, information on Frances first fundraising training scheme, and the upcoming journal of the European Fundraising Association.

Last but not least, the Resource Alliance brings you a review of A Handbook of NGO Governance written by Marilyn Wyatt as well as updates on our latest programme developments and upcoming events.

We hope you enjoy the new look and exciting content, and join us again soon for the next edition of Global Connections.

>> Social Enterprises - the Road Less Travelled by Mike Naholi

There is considerable debate as to whether or not non governmental organisations (NGOs) and other social organisations should run businesses (or enterprises) to raise income.  To some organisations, profits and business are dirty words that have no place in the development arena. To others surpluses (or profits) and business provide a crucial source of income that contributes to the sustainability of the organisation. This article will not dwell on either side of this debate. It will focus on potential windfalls and pitfalls in owning or running a business as a social organisation. Read more

>> NGO of the Year: The Garden of Hope Foundation

In the dark moments of exploitation, violence and abuse, one looks for a  sanctuary, a place of rest and solitude. What better place to find than a garden that nurtures hope.

The Garden of Hope Foundation in Taiwan was founded in 1998 and is dedicated to providing necessary services to women in need. It has three key objectives: to protect women and girls against sexual exploitation, sexual abuse and domestic violence; to improve the rights and status of women; and to promote gender equality by empowering young women.

The organisation was named NGO of the Year at the 2004 Asia Pacific NGO Awards, an event which aimed to recognise and celebrate the achievements of some of the most impressive and inspiring non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the region. Read more
